Book Review: Swimming at Night (or also known as The Sea Sisters) by Lucy Clarke

Author: Lucy Clarke
Published: October 9th, 2012
Publisher: Touchstone
Pages: 384
Rating: 4/5

Synopsis:

Katie’s world is shattered by the news that her headstrong and bohemian younger sister, Mia, has been found dead at the bottom of a cliff in Bali. The authorities say that Mia jumped—that her death was a suicide.

Although they’d hardly spoken to each other since Mia suddenly left on an around-the-world trip six months earlier, Katie refuses to accept that her sister would have taken her own life. Distraught that they never made peace, Katie leaves her orderly, sheltered life in London behind and embarks on a journey to find out the truth. With only the entries of Mia’s travel journal as her guide, Katie retraces the last few months of her sister’s life, and—page by page, country by country—begins to uncover the mystery surrounding her death. . . .

Weaving together the exotic settings and suspenseful twists of Alex Garland’s The Beach with a powerful tale of familial love in the spirit of Rosamund Lupton’s Sister, Swimming at Night is a fast-paced, accomplished, and gripping debut novel of secrets, loss, and forgiveness.

Deskynowsky's Review:

I really enjoyed this book.. I think I was in the right mood to read this kind of book.. a good choice for an Adult Contemporary Summer Read..

I bought this book without knowing what it was all about, the cover of the book drew me in and when I read the synopsis at the back, this book promised an adventure of traveling to some summery places in the world.. (well, the mentioned of Bali won me over tho.. haha).

Basically this book was about two sisters, Katie and Mia Greene. And one day, Katie received a phone call at night then a visit from some officials that informed her about her sister, Mia who was found dead in Bali. Long story short, Katie and Mia were not in the best relationship situation and for the last six months (when Mia started her traveling journey) were kinda no-significant-communication and cold. Then after the death of Mia, Katie got Mia's travel journal, marking and answering some important events in these sisters life that lead to Katie who then decided one day to follow her sister's journey, traveling around the world to find some answers following Mia's death which by officials announced as an act of suicide.

I really liked these books mainly because of the characters, the twists, the drama, and the plot. The characters were really intriguing and how then the story shaped the addictive drama plot that untangling the mystery surrounding Mia's death layer by layer. Some of the twists were pretty unpredictable too. At the end, I really enjoyed the traveling adventure story in the book. It was kinda Eat, Pray, Love but with mystery and drama and also someone died in this book.

At first I thought this book was going to be a crime mystery kind of book, but it was not.. It was more mystery, drama, contemporary read and it was perfect to read at the pool-side or at the beach.. :)

This book has other name too, I think Swimming at Night is the title for the American Market. The book's original name is The Sea Sisters, I think this one is for the UK market. And I really enjoyed Lucy Clarke's writing style, recently she has new book published called A Single Breathe, it sounds amazingly intriguing, I might check that out soon ;)

Enter the W.A.R.— the war to avenge Willa Ames-Rowan. Four girls. Four very different motives for justice and revenge, and only one rule: destroy the Gregory family at any cost.

Deskynowsky's Review:

So after reading this book....I decided to give it two stars..

Well, it was not horrible, I found myself enjoyed reading it.. It was okay, thou there were things that I want to question... Because somehow it was just left me more confused...

These characters in the book were mostly unlikeable, but the writers did a pretty good job on how to make them pretty interesting when they put them in dramatic situation. The drama, mystery, and how they act in that situation, well it was quite intriguing.. The story was told in 5 parts.. And divided based on 4 characters POVs (part 4 & 5 from one particular character POV).. I think it meant for readers to get more understanding and relate to these characters, well tbh I still didn't like them and I couldn't sympathize with them as well..

In summary of everything about this book in one sentence, it would be "there was something happened, then nothing at all".. Yeah it was confusing.. I feel in a way, these characters didn't do much, and the mystery kinda unraveled in not very spectacular way..

It was meant to be a YA mystery summer book, and I was drawn to the mysterious cover, intriguing synopsis, and that sticker telling the book to be "TeenVogue YA hottest read"..

Oh well...

Hide and Seek by Sara Shepard (The Lying Game #4)

Publisher: Harper Teen
Year Published: 2012
Pages: 228
Rating: didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it (my current rating) it was amazing
My friends and I used to play lying games.

Now my twin sister is living one.

When I was alive, my family seemed picture-perfect. My adoptive parents adored me, and my little sister, Laurel, copied my every move. But now that my long-lost twin, Emma, has taken my place to solve my murder, we're both learning just how flawed my family really is.

Laurel is shooting Emma nasty looks and sneaking around with my ex-boyfriend. And it turns out my parents are keeping a huge secret--could it be the reason I'm dead?

How far would they go to keep the truth buried? No one can harm me now, but Emma is still fair game. And if she's not careful, she'll end up buried, too. . . .

This is the 4th book of The Lying Game series by Sara Shepard (yes, she's also the author of Pretty Little Liars series). The previous books had its own surprises, but it was quite predictable. We all know that probably there gonna be six books in total for TLG series, so it's just obvious that we will not know who is Sutton's killer until the very last book. HOWEVER, this 4th book was really surprising me :D

In this 4th book, we learned more about the facts of Emma and Sutton. In my own opinion, it was really mind-blowing (the facts would give you "WTH/WTF was just happening?!" moments, coz I knew I did). At the end of book, the only question formed in my head was "who would have thought?"

I really love how Sara takes her time in revealing the secret one by one. Now I understand why this book will not end that quickly or it will spoil the element of surprises. Although, I hope it will not stretch to be more than six books (see PLL? it's like more than 10 books already xp)

It is actually a very quick reading, only 288 pages. But I really like this series. It was such a page turner. If you are looking for a quick-reading with a bit of element of mystery/crime/teen drama, Sara Shepard's teen books (PLL or TLG series) will be perfect for you. I really can not wait for the 5th book ("Cross My Heart, Hope to Die") that will be published next year.

Until then..... Happy Reading! XD
