2015 Blog: So how is it gonna be...

Hi to whoever read this post,

I realized that there has been lack of posting from my side. I don't have any excuse for that, it was a pretty hectic year for me especially the last couple of months.. I do still want to continue with the blog, because this is my baby.. And I really need to be committed..  something that I need to really work on... I have to try to ignore the lack of views on my page (don't let it discourage me!) and more of thinking that I do this because I really love books and I just wanna share my love for books.. Whether there will be someone reading my posts or not..

Well well, Happy 2015! One for sure, I have no resolution nor goal this year, I would just do whatever I wanna do and let it fly from there.. I am not good at planning anw..

So.... what are you going to read, Deska? well for January 2015, I have 4 books in mind that I want to get through, two of them (The Retribution of Mara Dyer and The Queen of The Tearling) are gifts from my friends (THANK YOU SO MUCH IKAO and AMY <3), and the other two (These Broken Stars and The Silkworm) are the two books that I really feel the need to read at the moment (other than The Golden Son by Pierce Brown that I just ordered online yesterday).

And what a dilemma, I do not know which one to start first, so I am going to do the TBR jar thing and see what books I will read first (pulling the nominees):

Okay, so here is the result, I will read these books in order:
1. These Broken Stars by Amy Kaufmann and Meghan Spooner
2. The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith
3. The Queen of The Tearling by Erika Johansen
4. The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

So excited! Let's Read! ;)

TBR for period of 16th to 30th of June 2014 - Fantasy Marathon!

I am freaking excited to start these awesome fantasy books!

So I have:

- 2nd and 3rd books of Demon's Lexicon Trilogy by Sarah Rees Brennan, the Demon's Covenant an the Demon's Surrender ! I really really really love Demon's Lexicon, you can see my review of the book here (Book Review: The Demon's Lexicon (The Demon's Lexicon #1) by Sarah Rees Brennan). And I am sooo excited to see where everything will go after the whole crazy things in the 1st book!

- Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. This is going to be my first book by Brandon Sanderson. I have seen Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy around on BookTube community quite often lately, so I think I will start with this one coz I think it's a standalone so far.. And see if I really like it, I will start to collect the Mistborn trilogy books afterward :)

- AND SO EXCITED for STROMDANCER by JAY KRISTOFF!!! I think it's a Japanese Steampunk story.. It looks freaking bad-ass!

Synopsis:

Deskynowsky's Review (Free Spoilers)

I was considering 3.5 stars, but I thought about it again, and decided to give it 3 stars..

It was Ok, definitely a coming of age story, about a boy who used to be The Golden Boy, The Popular Boy, but then he had a car accident that changed his life forever... And in the state of his changed life, he found another life that he had been overlooked... He started to find the true meaning of being a life etc etc etc...

I like the premise of the story... The writing style was a bit slow and kinda long (in a way) and yeah..... it was really Ok, I didn't feel any particular feelings after finished reading this book..... The characters were Ok, well-developed, thou I could not say the same to a particular female character who helped the main male character in the book post-car accident.. But I thought she had served her purpose in the boy's life here..

So.. yeah... and on-to the next read!!! :)

Book Review: Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Author: Morgan Matson
Published: May 6th, 2014
Publisher: Simon & Schuster (hardback)
Pages: 449
Rating: 5/5

Deskynowsky's Review (Free Spoilers):

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!

This is definitely my favorite summer read so far! A very very very perfect Summer-Read! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

This book somehow reminded me of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (in a way). These two are totally different story, but I think similar in how I feel about the female lead characters.. Although, I have to admit I love Emily Hughes more, the main female in Since You've Been Gone.. and Gosh.. can I have a Frank Porter!??? WE NEED TO CLONE THIS GUY!!!

This was a story about Emily who had a bestfriend named Sloane and then Sloane kinda disappeared at the beginning of Summer. Emily was a girl, a pretty much socially awkward and unconfident about herself and Sloane was exactly the opposite of Emily. Their friendship worked so well, and Emily was pretty dependent on Sloane in terms of social-interactions with a general-similar-age-group-of-people. The disappearance of Sloane had such impacts on Emily's life. She was like a ship without a captain. Then suddenly she received a list from Sloane sent by mail, a list of things that Emily would not normally do. But she really wanted to find Sloane, so she was hoping by doing the things in the list would put her closer to find Sloane. And this was the start of very many intersting, loving, heartwarming, funny, romantic adventures....

This book is so perfect and I really love it.. I love the writing style, the development of characters (yes, all characters in this book developed, not just the main one), the plot, the scenes, the drama, the romance, the adventures, the comedy.... oh man.. it's awesome....

If you like contemporary books, I am 100% sure that you will enjoy this book! So GO READ IT!!! <3

Book Review: The Passage (The Passage #1) by Justin Cronin

Rating: didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it it was amazing (my current rating)

In case, you don't know.. I read this book because of Joseph Morgan.. If you guys don't know him, google him.. It's been a long time since I really like an actor and considering myself as a fan. haha.. I like many actors and actresses, but never really thought myself as a fan.. but this time, I make an exception ;)

4.5 stars! - SPOILER FREE!

This is one of those books that could catch me off my guard.. I just can't seem to formulate coherent thoughts of what I felt after finishing this book. It was just a mix of anxieties.

It took me a while to finish this book, other than the monstrosity of how thick this book is, there is also a busy life to live.. work and everything, mostly the limited time.. but what a journey and experience reading this book.

I don't think people who can not bear a really slow and long development of a story-line can enjoy this book. But if you are patient enough and up for the long, intricate, and complexed details of a story, this book probably is for you. Because there were so much of it. I think it was from the start till well most of the stories anw.. xp There were actions here and there, but mostly the story was about a journey.. a very long one and a-very-not-smooth one. There were just so many things happened, and most of them were unexpected. Surprises and puzzles of why things happened the way it was happening were kinda overwhelming.

Okay so let's talk about the book.

This book is a sci-fi/post-apocalyptic/dystopian/adult fiction.

So basically, this was a story about a journey of the-descended-survivors in the post-apocalyptic world.. The world in the state of apocalypse because of things human-made during the Time Before. Humans created through experiment monsters (or twelve of them) that were becoming disaster when all of them broke free from their containment-facility. And their escape has created pandemic that crossing all over the states (in the USA) and created more monsters or virals. And for sure, it put down the history of human. These monsters were like vampires. So it was really interesting to read. Instead of as supernatural/paranormal creatures, vampires in this book were human-worst-made-creation. and speaking about the Twelve, there were more about them than what it seemed. They were like the originals (hah, I can't think straight when I said that.. ) and the kings of the virals (Volturi to the Twilight world) xp

The story line. I can divide the book into two parts. First, the pre-apocalyptic story. It was the intro story of how these things happened. In this book, they called it "The Time Before". and the second part, the post-apocalyptic one, where the journey and everything began. When people were starting to find answers and actually do something about it. At this point, it was like I was watching "The Walking Dead" tv series. and I love TWD, so I really enjoyed the process of the reading and the development of the story. The story was detailed and complexed. But it was amazing to see how the story developed and gave so many surprises. I like how the world setting and everything were able to shape the story itself. It was like the story was alive and forced everyone to live in such a state. Although, in the Time Before, we learned that everything happened because of humans.

It told the story from the 3rd person perspective of multi-characters in the book.. It was confusing at first, especially at the middle of the book or at the time when the story was set in the colony. There were quite many characters in the book, so sometime it was difficult to keep track on who was who.. haha.. but I got the hang of it after some pages (thou sometimes I had to get back to previous chapter to read about which characters was who). Other than the main casts (whether it was in pre- or post- apocalyptic world) were really amazing characters. I could actually feel their personal and emotional growth. So that was one of the great things about the book.

As many good story went on, it has a crazy ending. And it was told in the way that made me stunned. Okay, crazy! CRAZY!

oh and one more thing, it was like the sense of time in this book stopped. and somehow it also influenced the story (well, that was how I felt ;) )

And am actually pretty excited to read the sequel (thou I don't know when will I read it.. ) xp

Alright then... up to the next read.. :)

Book Review: Under The Never Sky (Under The Never Sky #1) by Veronica Rossi

Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Year Published: 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 376
Rating: 4 of 5 stars false

Spoilers Free!

Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered.

This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent energy storms will. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must come together to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

Okay.. I am actually conflicted whether on giving this book 3 or 4 stars.. this time there is no in between..

I honestly enjoyed this book. I really like the world setting and development. I think it was unique and different. There were elements combination of sci-fi-dystopian and primitive-fantasy. It was like there was two worlds in the story. Both were very different, but related. And they were on earth. One lived in the security of isolated dome, and the other one lived constantly in danger of deadly storm (and other weird things) outside the dome. Both were also different in the sense of how they rule their own world.

Then the story plot and character development. I really like the idea of the story plot, but maybe there were quite many different things going on, sometimes I just had "what what what just happened?!" reactions. Still I adore the plot thou, think it was different and refreshing. And as for the characters, I love how complex they could be. But again there were quite many different things going on in these characters as well that also gave me "what what what?! She/He is what?!" reactions.

and here was my problem also why it can be 3 stars.. I pretty much enjoyed the first 280-ish pages and the last 50 pages. And pages between the first 280 pages to the last 50 pages were kinda let me down a bit. Somewhere along where they were on the run from the cannibal tribe and the saccharine-sweet-romance that was happening, there were slightly.....off a bit moments? well I don't know, I just felt that way.. but hey at least the last 50 pages towards the end, the story was kinda picking up again and it even surprised me.

Why it can be 4 stars.. the world setting and well.. mainly because I love the unexpected surprises that this book gave me. Quite many things, that I did not see them coming (nor even think).. and the ending, got to love that one.. Pretty good cliffhanger.. And I could not help to find myself wanting to read the sequel. So it got to be good ;)

yup, that's pretty much summed up everything ;D

Book Review (a slightly out of ordinary one): The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

Spoilers Free!

Year Published: 2013
Publisher: Atria Books
Pages: 448 pages
Rating: didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it it was amazing (my current rating)

Thanks NetGalley and Atria Books for providing me with the eBook :)

I live in a world without magic or miracles. A place where there are no clairvoyants or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman boys to save you. A place where people die and music disintegrates and things suck. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk.

Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.

Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances.

Since yesterday (15 Feb 2013), I am officially an emotional-wrecked! Thanks to a certain vampire tv series and its angst/tragic/beautiful ship that is my current ultimate OTP. YES! I am talking about you, #TVD S04E14!

And today, I finished reading this book (16 Feb 2013), and it just adds more emotional battle in my heart and soul..

I don't expect that I can be more emotionally-exhausted-and-drained after yesterday.. But it seems it's very much possible..

coz now I am just full of feels and emotions.. and I just don't know what to do..

Okay, so let's talk about this book..

WHAT WITH ALL OF THESE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS??? You guys ruin my life.. huhu (not that I am complaining thou..).. But still... what you guys have done to me?!

Nastya and Josh..... what I can say about them... I feel for these two so much.. Two people who were coming from two different worlds and have their own messed up lives with terrible histories.. They were facing their own demon and isolated from people around them.. Then it was like fate and destiny had their own plan to have these two met and saved each other..

This book has a very beautiful story line, amazing writing, and great character developments..

Like seriously, I don't know what to write, coz I just feel so much when I read this book.. It was like I could feel what these characters feel..

I love how are these characters were written.. especially for Nastya and Josh as the female and male leads in this book. How their characters were shaped from their painful pasts that had caused them to be socially isolated and misunderstood. Although, they were still very much admirable! How strong they were in facing uncertainties in life and how they fought and saved each other.. it was really beautiful and heartfelt.. It just seemed like they were different, but actually they were the same..I could also kinda relate to other characters in the book who were pretty awesome as well.

Then the story line.... I enjoyed the SL so much.. It was great and captivating! love how the writing kinda make the story easy to digest, but still without losing its charms and purpose..

I put this book in the category of New-Adult book.. This one works for me like charm! I love it! definitely goes to my favorite books category..

I got this ebook for review, and I most certain will love to buy a copy of this.. It was just such a beautiful read.. and wish I can hug the writer.... *sending Katja Millay a virtual hugs..*

This was (and still is) my favorite lines from the book:
"Maybe one day you'll come back, Maybe you never will and that'll suck, but you can't keep doing this. The blame and the self-loathing and the bullshit. I can't watch that. It makes me hate you for hating yourself. I don't want to lose you. But I'd rather lose you if it means you'll be happy. I think if you come back with me today, you'll never be okay. And I'll never be okay if you aren't. I need to know that there's away for people like us to end up okay. I need to know that there even is such a thing as okay, or maybe not just okay, maybe even good, and it's out there and we just haven't found it yet. There's got to be a happier ending than this here. There's got to be a better story. Because we deserve one. You deserve one. Even if it doesn't end with you coming back to me."

Maybe my only problem was just, I continued reading this book till finish after I watched a very emotional scene on TVD 4x14, especially Klaroline scenes.. and I just could not help to have Feels-Attack.. coz Nastya and Josh kinda remind me of Klaus and Caroline.. (in their own very way..)

And suddenly I think of this..... O(T^T)O

Sorry for this slightly weird review.. At the moment I am just having so much emotions going on for these four characters.. so it was kinda mixed and I just can not help myself to feel it that way.. hiks.. fictional characters you are going to be the death of me..

*Gifs are not mine, they are belonged to their respectful owners who are very awesome people! ;*

me after reading Cinder:
I can't properly function right now............. I just need to read the sequel at this second!....... (T^T)

Btw..... it's.....

SOLID FIVE GOLD STARS! (and maybe more.........)!

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK! This book has exceeded my expectation!

At first, I was kinda reluctant to read this book.. It was just because it's a retelling story of Cinderella with Cyborgs in it.. and it did not sound appealing to me.. and oh dear God, how happy I am to be proven soooo wrong........ I thank everyone who kept forcing me to read this book.. I need to have a group hug..

This book goes easily directly to my all time fave books! This book is so amazing! ultra-awesome! It's Dystopian! It's Post-apocalyptic! It's Sci-Fi!

I love the story-line! Probably one of the best story-lines I ever read.. It has the right pace, right amount of action, mysteries, conspiracies, and romance, and importantly, great story development. What I like the most from Cinder was that although you can guess a certain thing, but it still can surprise and shock you, thanks to the great timing of revealing that thing..

One other thing that I really love is its originality. Despite of being a retelling book of Cinderella story, it still owned its story-line. It's original and unique. Totally no-where near Cinderella story.. xp

The characters......................... AMAZING Characterization of these awesome fictional characters, whether they are the antagonists or the protagonists.. You just can not help to get drawn with so much feelings to these characters.. Love how Marissa wrote these characters <3 I love Cinder and Kai chemistry, I just love these two characters a lot.. then there is also Dr. Erland, not so much of him, but he is one interesting character.. then Queen Levana, Adri, and Pearl, I hate these three characters with all my being.. haha..

I wonder what had Marissa Meyer been thinking when she wrote this book, how she got the idea.. Because I am still mesmerized by the world setting of this book.. and the story line... and Thank God, I already pre-ordered Scarlett, the sequel of Cinder.. Can't wait to read it.. The ending of this book was quite a cliffhanger!

If you haven't read this book, I strongly urge you to go to a bookstore or open any of book-shopping online website and get this book! It's really a great read! <3

'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories, and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.

Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins.

This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight...
Wow this book surprised me!
I always love post-apocalyptic or end-of-the-world reads, definitely one of my favorite book themes (of all time).
This book was so refreshing and original. I love the concept of this book, telling the story from Zombie point of view. I never read anything like this before..
What I really adored was how the story was told. It had that same feelings like when I read Catcher in The Rye or Looking for Alaska. R narration of the story was so unique and details, it was trying to give understandings or answers on how Zombies see things.. I really enjoyed it (It's not like I read many Zombie POV books).. Because it was just humorous and very human in a twisted way..
And characters development, R characters was clearly developing, from a heartless zombie (but still cute) to lovable-and-human zombie. Maybe people already know that this book was about the possibility of Zombie-cure.. So it is not actually a spoiler, right.. well.. it was just totally amazing, how R started finding his humanity that was hidden deep deep down in his dead-heart.. And the girl that was the trigger of this reverse-process, Julie. I don't have a lot to say about this character. I mean Julie was Julie. She was just herself throughout the story. Their interaction was believable so I didn't really have problem with it. And I really like that M. He was R's zombie friend. Also Perry. Perry for me also played a very important role in reviving  R's humanity. In a way, it was because of Perry that R noticed Julie. And because of Perry's memories and guidances that bring human R back. So he was definitely important.
There were not so much story about R's background (or any other zombies). But there were definitely snippets of Julie and Perry background stories. It was kinda problematic and dramatic. A bit of family, personal, and love dramas.
Story plot, it followed the changes in R. The changes in R was giving a new perspective on how the story went. When he started to see and think differently, I as the reader found this really interesting, because he was just so awkward and when he started to understand things in very human way, I just could not help to like him more and more as the story progressed. There was also a bit of action toward the end, but totally not the focus of the book. So don't expect to read much about it ;)
Alright then, as you all know that this book is already made into movie and going to hit the theaters in February, so please check the trailer below ;) - I personally think it's always better to read the book first before watch the movie. If you watch the movie first, it's just going to be a major spoiler.. hehe.. enjoy!

I really want to thank all of you who have visited my blog.. I really appreciate it a lot.. :D It has been 4 months since I launched this blog.. I am truly thankful for it.. Having and starting this blog is one of the best things that happened to me in 2012.. (and also the best decision ever..)

So how was your holiday? Hope you all had amazing time there.. gathering with family and friends, opening gifts, enjoying majestic feasts, and many other fantastic things.. It's always a good time.. :) December is also happened to be my most favorite month of the year.. How come I am not loving December? I have my birthday, Christmas and New Year holiday as well in one month.. It's just a wonderful time.. ;)

A lot of things happened to me in 2012.. good or bad.. But I am really thankful for everything.. Thankful for all the good things, and also thankful for all the bad (hope it will not happen again).. I finally finished my study and graduated in September :) was one among the good things that happened. I also thankful for all friends that I have.. Old friends that are still sticking with me.. and new friends who are becoming my best friends.. You guys are amazing.. Love you so much <3 and also my mom, the only parent that I have left.. I will never be able to repay all of her hardworks for me.. not with all money and gold in the world.. I am just wishing that I can make her happy (always and forever)..

Talking about resolutions in 2013, I only have simple resolutions for this year;

  • get a new job, I kinda miss the rushing-hour, office/work-socialization and the thrill of doing multiple things at the same time (under-pressure ofc xp)..
  • read more classics and modern classics (while keeping my YA books-TBR piling high)..
  • go traveling, I still haven't decided where to (I will leave the option open for now ;p )..
  • continue my writing, I think this is about time I end my writing-hiatus, I need to start again at some point.. :)
  • watch all episodes of Teen Wolf Season 2 also that Doctor Who series that my friend forced me to watch..
  • VLOGGING! Vlog or Video Blog is something that I've been considering to do.. I've been watching awesome BookTubers on YouTube and suddenly, it was calling me.. Those BookTubers are really such inspiring and very talented people.. But first, I need to know what I am facing if I am going to do that.. I am pretty much not a gifted person when it comes to graphic design or anything to do with editing.. I am not even familiar with the software.. so there are still things that I need to learn and try first.. I hope I can do it someday this year.. ;)

Hmm.. so pretty simple resolutions I guess, but If I can do all of those things, I will be a very happy person.. May all good wishes in the world come true ;*

Okay move on to other subject.. My TBR books for January 2013! I am so excited.. These are the books that I hope I can read this month.. There are always possibilities that maybe I can manage to read more than what is in my TBR January 2013 :)

TBR in January 2013

Alright then! I guess that'd be all for now ;)

Until the next post! Have a fun read! :D

The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

Year Published: 2012
Publisher: Little Brown
Pages: 503
Rating: didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it it was amazing (my current rating)

A BIG NOVEL ABOUT A SMALL TOWN ...

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils ... Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

If I can describe this book in two words, it will be DRAMATIC & UNPREDICTABLE.

This book is amazing! now that I have read this book, I am confused on why it has such a low-rating (based on GoodReads). Well I think it depends on the reader's preference. If you expect smth similar to Harry Potter, you better stay away from this book. It's far far away from it, not even half millimetre close.

If you want to read this, you need to be open-minded and ready to be blown away.

There are three things that I love the most about this book; The Characters, The Endless Drama (Story-Line) and The Feeling of you-have-no-idea-what-is-going-to-happen (Unpredictable).

The characters (for me) were the selling point of this book. They were so rich! It felt like they were real! Rowling's writing style is so vivid and realistic, so it allowed me to feel the emotions of those characters. It was crazy!

The Endless Dramas (story-line), I was not kidding when I said it was dramatic. It brought the meaning of dramatic to a whole new level. The death of Barry Fairbrother triggered multiple dramas in the small town of Pagford. These multiple dramas were so complex, dramatic and different but somehow they were all connected in a strange way but made-sense! And the writing was flowing easily, it felt like I was watching a drama TV series that dragged me for seasons of heartache (in a very good and realistic way).

and it was so UNPREDICTABLE! This is one of among very few books that until the end I could not see or guess or predict what will happen. It was surprising until the end.

phew.. I can tell you that it was such an emotional roller coaster.. I love it and this is definitely one of my faves. I voted this as the best contemporary fiction in 2012. <3
